Exterior Dimensions

If you’re looking for a small SUV, chances are you are looking for a practical design that offers more space than your average hatchback. At 4425mm long the XC40 is at the longer end of cars in its class, being lengthier than the Jeep Compass and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross but marginally smaller than the BMW X1.

Plus at 1851mm wide the XC40 is also slightly wider than many of its rivals, this means that it is able to offer more onboard space than other models.

At 1658mm high it’s just 6mm lower than its bigger sibling the XC60. While the wheelbase measures up at just 2702mm.

Interior Dimensions

Having a larger vehicle is of no benefit if you don’t feel the difference once inside. So you’ll be pleased to learn that the XC40 doesn’t disappoint in this area. Headroom up front is 1030mm and you also get a generous 1040mm of legroom. Plus with 1440mm of shoulder room and 1390mm hip room, both driver and front passenger can enjoy spacious surroundings, which only adds to the exceptional levels of comfort you’ll experience while on the go in the XC40.

Rear passengers get slightly less space however it is still relatively roomy, with 994mm of headroom and 917mm of legroom.  While in regards to shoulder and hip room rear passengers only get 11mm and 2mm less respectively than those riding up front, meaning it should be possible to comfortably seat three adults in the back.

Boot Space

The 460-litre capacity boot space isn’t class-leading, with both the Volkswagen Tiguan and BMW X1 having larger boots. However, the usefully square shape and lack of loading lip in the XC40 will ensure you can make the most of all available space and that loading up will be a doddle.

The XC40 also benefits from a handy underfloor storage area which can be used to separate items. Plus if that wasn’t enough the rear seats can be folded down to open out the onboard storage further.

The 11.4m turning circle is fairly compact for a vehicle of these dimensions so manoeuvring an SUV of this size shouldn’t present any problems.

You should manage to travel a fair way without having to fill up as the Volvo has a plentiful 54-litre capacity fuel tank. Depending on which engine you opt for claimed mpg capabilities range from 39.8-58.2mpg meaning you should manage to cover approximately 460-680miles before needing to stop off for a top up.

The Volvo XC40 has fantastic towing capacity too; with 2100kg braked towing weight and 750kg unbraked towing weight, it will make light work of towing.
